Frequently
Asked
Questions

1. What exactly is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a non-medical professional who provides practical, emotional, and informational support to families after the birth of a baby. My role is to nurture the birthing parent, allowing them to rest, recover, and bond with their newborn, and to help the whole family adjust smoothly to their new dynamic. I focus entirely on supporting you through this precious, yet often challenging, fourth trimester.

2. What kind of support does Bec the Doula offer?

I offer a range of services tailored to your family's needs. This includes practical help like basic meal prep, light tidying, laundry, and running small errands. I also provide hands-on baby care, assist with feeding (breastfeeding or bottle-feeding), offer newborn care education, and help with older sibling care. Crucially, I provide dedicated emotional support, offering a non-judgmental ear and a quiet, comforting presence for you to debrief your birth, express your feelings, and build your confidence as a parent.

3. What is a prenatal postpartum planning session?

This is a chance for us to connect before the baby arrives, get to know each other and discuss your hopes and concerns for the postpartum period. We can draw up a plan for your postpartum so that the whole family is prepared and know their roles. It helps us build a rapport so you feel comfortable and confident in my support from day one.

4. How far in advance should I book your services?

My availability is intentionally limited to ensure everyone receives the dedicated care they deserve. To avoid any disappointment, I highly recommend booking your package as early as possible.

5. What areas do you serve?

I offer postpartum doula services to families in Bibra Lake and the surrounding SOR suburbs within 20kms. I will accept clients out of area where available with an additional travel fee.

6. Do you offer custom packages or one-off visits?

Yes, I understand that every family's needs are unique. While I have standard packages, package extensions and one-off visits can often be accommodated, depending on my schedule. Just reach out, and we can chat about what you need and create a plan that works best for you.

7. Do you provide food?

That's an excellent question! Nourishment is a huge priority during the postpartum period.

  • Pre-Prepared Meals: To ensure I adhere to all health and safety guidelines (as I'm not running a registered kitchen), I don't sell precooked meals. I do love baking and will occasionally bring a sweet treat along to my visits.

  • In-Home Cooking: I am absolutely happy to prepare and cook meals for you in your home during our booked sessions. This ensures you have warm, fresh, comforting food that features your favourite (allergy safe) products.

  • Ingredients: All ingredients for cooking are paid for and supplied by the client. I can happily follow your favourite recipes, or I can suggest some simple options from my own collection.

  • Ingredient Sourcing: If you require me to pick up groceries or source ingredients, I am happy to do so.  I can be reimbursed with a square reader (tap & go) payment during our session.

8. How long are your sessions, and what are your typical hours? My sessions are typically 2-3 hours long, designed to provide meaningful support without overwhelming your day. I aim to be flexible to fit around your family's routine, and we can discuss preferred visiting times during our initial consultation.

9. Do you provide breastfeeding or bottle-feeding support?

Yes, I offer support with all feeding methods. My goal is to help you feel confident and comfortable in your chosen feeding method, providing guidance and connecting you with lactation consultants if needed.

10. Can you help with my older children?

Absolutely! A big part of postpartum support is ensuring the whole family adjusts. I can engage with older children, play with them, or simply keep them occupied so you can focus on your newborn, rest, or have a moment to yourself.

11. What if I just need someone to talk to?

My role is very much about providing a safe and non-judgmental space for you. Whether you want to debrief your birth experience, talk through your transition into motherhood, or simply need a chat, I am here for you. Your emotional well-being is a core part of the support I offer.

12. Are your fees covered by private health insurance or Medicare?

Generally, doula services are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance in Australia. However, I encourage you to check with your specific provider as policies can change. I also offer payment plans for my packages to help make support more accessible.

13. Are you a medical professional?

No, I am not a medical professional, and my services are non-medical. I do not provide medical advice, diagnose conditions, or perform clinical tasks. My role is to offer practical, emotional, and informational support, working alongside your healthcare providers to ensure your holistic well-being. If medical concerns arise, I will always encourage you to consult with your doctor or midwife.

14. What are your credentials?

This is such an important question, and I totally get why you'd ask! When you're inviting someone into your home, you want to feel completely confident in their ability to support you.

While the doula industry here in Australia isn't regulated (meaning no formal training is technically required), I believe in continuous learning to bring you the most up-to-date and evidence-based support. That's why I have completed a Postpartum Doula Training Course with the Doula Training Organisation of Australia. In addition to this I hold a current Working With Children Check, a First Aid Certificate, a National Police Clearance, and a Food Safety and Food Allergens Certificate.

And then there is my, real-life experience! As a mum of three myself (and the oldest of my 6 siblings), I've been in the trenches and understand what those early weeks are really like. My own journey has given me a heap of hands-on experience – from exclusively pumping and bottle-feeding two of my little ones, to exclusively breastfeeding my third, and even navigating the challenges of tongue tie revisions.

So, it's this blend of formal education and genuine lived experience that I bring to every family I support. I truly 'get it,' and I'm always learning and growing to make sure I can serve you in the best way possible!

15. What is your availability?

I pour my heart into supporting each of my mamas, which means my availability is intentionally limited to ensure everyone gets the dedicated care they deserve.

As a mum of three myself, I work part-time as a postpartum doula, allowing me to provide highly focused, personalised support to a select few families at a time. This way, you know you're getting my best, non-rushed self!
